After Relying on Boats for So Long, Administration Starts Alternative Arrangements for Crossing at Cut Dam of Nearly 100 Meters
Malda: The Bhutni police station area of Malda was flooded by the waters of the Ganges. Houses, schools, roads—vast areas had been submerged. To quickly drain the water from the flooded area, the administration had cut a dam in a part of South Chandipur. However, even after the water receded, local residents are facing new problems due to the cut dam.
In South Chandipur, a part of nearly 100 meters of dam has been cut. As a result, there is currently no direct means of transportation through that part. The only hope for the locals has become boats. From daily commuting to transporting essential goods, residents are facing difficulties in all areas.
In this situation, the administration has taken initiatives to alleviate the suffering of the general public. According to the district administration's directive, a floating footbridge is being constructed at the cut dam area. This temporary crossing is being made using drums within an iron framework.
It is reported that although vehicles cannot pass through this footbridge created by the administration, locals will be able to cross on foot and with bicycles. As a result, dependence on boats is expected to decrease somewhat, and the daily commuting difficulties for locals are also expected to lessen.
Local residents have stated that the decision to cut the dam was necessary to quickly drain the water during the flood. However, after the water receded, transportation problems have arisen through the cut area. While this temporary initiative by the administration provides some relief, they are seeking a **permanent solution** to the problem.
Residents claim that if a **lock gate is constructed** at the cut dam area permanently, it could solve future water control issues as well as transportation problems for people. With the construction of the floating footbridge initiated by the administration, residents of South Chandipur are currently experiencing some relief.
