Attempt to Smuggle Gold, Diamonds, and Precious Stones Worth Crores at Kolkata Airport; Youth from Rajasthan Arrested
**Kolkata:** A youth has been arrested by the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate’s **NSCBI Police Station** for allegedly attempting to smuggle nearly **one crore rupees worth of gold, diamonds, precious stones, and emeralds** from Kolkata Airport. The arrested individual is named **Ram Avatar Sharma** and is a resident of Rajasthan. He will be presented in **Barakpur Court** on Thursday.
According to police sources, the NSCBI Police were monitoring the area near Kolkata Airport on Wednesday evening based on a tip-off. During this time, a scooter was stopped on suspicion. A large quantity of precious metals was recovered from the scooter during the search.
The recovered items include nearly **400 grams of gold**, with an estimated market value of **around 60 lakhs**. Additionally, several hundred grams of silver and diamonds, along with various precious gems including emeralds, were also recovered. The total estimated market value of the recovered items is **around one crore rupees**, according to initial police estimates.
During the investigation, police learned that the arrested individual was taking gold jewelry collected from a person at Kolkata Airport on the scooter. It has come to light in the preliminary investigation that the plan was to deliver these valuable items to **Bada Bazar in Kolkata**.
The NSCBI Police will interrogate the arrested Ram Avatar Sharma in custody. Investigators suspect that an organized gang is active in this smuggling case. They are looking into who else is involved in that gang and where the precious metals and gems were sourced from and planned to be supplied.
The police stated that they will present the arrested individual in court and request custody. Investigators believe that more members of this smuggling ring may be arrested as the investigation progresses.
