India Takes Active Role in Ending Russia-Ukraine War, Direct Communication with Moscow and Kyiv: Jaishankar
New Delhi: India has begun to take a more active diplomatic role in ending the Russia-Ukraine war. Moving beyond just discussing the need to stop the war, New Delhi is now engaging in direct talks with both Russia and Ukraine. This was stated by India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
Jaishankar mentioned that India has long maintained that the resolution of this conflict is possible not on the battlefield, but through discussion, dialogue, and diplomacy. However, currently, India is not only expressing this position but is also seeking specific solutions to certain issues while maintaining communication with both countries.
Discussions Ongoing with Both Countries
While speaking at the Munich Leaders Meeting, Jaishankar stated that India's position on the Russia-Ukraine conflict has always been clear. India wants the war to end and for an acceptable solution to emerge through dialogue.
However, India's role has become more active recently. According to Jaishankar, regular communication is being maintained with both Moscow and Kyiv.
India is discussing not only major issues like stopping the war but also addressing some immediate problems arising from the conflict.
Multiple Topics Discussed Including Grain and Energy from the Black Sea
India's diplomatic initiatives include ensuring the safety of shipping in the Black Sea. Discussions have also been held regarding the issues arising from the war that have affected commercial shipping and goods transportation in the region.
Additionally, talks are ongoing regarding grain exports, energy exports, and the possibility of reducing attacks between the two parties, as stated by Jaishankar.
This means that India is seeking a long-term path to peace while also trying to address the real and urgent problems created by the war through communication between both parties.
India's Relationship with Russia is Also Important
Alongside the Russia-Ukraine war, the India-Russia relationship has also been reviewed recently.
During a meeting of the advisory committee of the Ministry of External Affairs, discussions were held regarding India's diplomatic communication with Russia, energy cooperation, trade, and significant transit projects.
India's position is to maintain relations with Russia while giving utmost importance to the interests of the Indian public and the country's energy security.
Ukraine is Also Valuing India's Initiative
Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has also made positive comments regarding India's diplomatic role.
According to him, Ukraine is reviewing the various peace proposals that different countries have offered to resolve the war. These include proposals from Turkey, Egypt, the United States, and India.
Sybiha claims that among the proposals under discussion, India's initiative is comparatively more comprehensive.
This comment makes it clear that despite having close ties with Russia, Kyiv is also keeping an eye on India's potential role in peace talks.
Putin Praises Modi's Peace Efforts
Russian President Vladimir Putin has also expressed a positive attitude towards India's initiatives.
Praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts to end the war, Putin stated that Modi has some good ideas regarding a peaceful resolution.
Prime Minister Modi has previously stated multiple times that problems must be sought at the negotiation table instead of on the battlefield.
India Faces a Major Test Ahead
The war between Russia and Ukraine has been ongoing for a long time. There are still significant differences between the positions of the two countries. Therefore, it will not be easy to quickly end the war through direct talks.
However, one thing is clear from Jaishankar's statements—India does not want to limit itself to merely advocating for peace this time.
New Delhi is trying to create an environment for broader peace talks in the future while addressing various problems arising from the war through communication with Moscow and Kyiv.
Now it remains to be seen how much India's active diplomatic initiative can bring Russia and Ukraine closer to the negotiation table.
