Germany Provides Over 1.3 Billion Euros in Aid to Ukraine Amid Russian Attacks During Merz's Visit to Kyiv
Kyiv, October 4 Germany has reinforced its message of support for Ukraine. During a surprise visit to Ukraine's capital Kyiv on Sunday, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that over 1.3 billion euros in military and energy assistance would be provided to Ukraine. Of this, nearly 1 billion euros will be allocated for military purposes, and about 350 million euros will be spent on rebuilding Ukraine's damaged energy infrastructure.
During Merz's visit to Kyiv, various critical infrastructures in the city were targeted by Russian attacks. A significant bridge on the northern side of Kyiv over the Dnipro River was also damaged in the attacks. Amid the assaults, the focus of the discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was on military assistance, including long-range weapons and drone defense. Germany's new military support aims to further strengthen Ukraine's air defense, which includes long-range strike-capable weapons, combat drones, advanced air defense systems, and satellite communication technology.
Germany will also fund the creation of new interceptors to counter Russian jet-powered 'Shahed' drones. There are plans to rapidly supply nearly 1,000 new interceptors from the German defense industry's production line. The goal of this technology is to destroy fast-moving Russian attacking drones in the air before winter repairs to Ukraine's electricity infrastructure.
In addition to military assistance, approximately 350 million euros will be allocated to strengthen Ukraine's electricity system. This funding will be used for repairing damaged substations, purchasing mobile generators, and reconstructing electricity transmission infrastructure. One of the primary goals is to keep Ukraine's electricity system operational, which has been affected by Russian attacks before winter.
Merz stated that the upcoming winter could be extremely difficult for Ukraine. He also accused Russia of continuing to attack power plants, substations, energy supply systems, and rail infrastructure. Germany-Ukraine's 8.5 billion euro agreement includes a total of 15 contracts and cooperation documents signed between Germany and Ukraine. Zelensky claimed that the total financial value of these agreements exceeds 8.5 billion euros, including security cooperation, arms production, defense industry, and joint industrial projects on Ukrainian soil.
Joint development of advanced weapons and drones with German defense organizations has also been emphasized. This will allow Ukraine's battlefield experience to be directly utilized in the creation of new defense technologies.
Merz announced plans to hold a meeting of the 'Coalition of the Willing' in Berlin during winter in collaboration with France and Britain. The meeting is expected to discuss how to further assist Ukraine and how to enhance cooperation among European countries.
Accompanying Merz on his visit to Kyiv were German Finance Minister Katharina Reich and representatives from nearly 10 German organizations in the defense and energy sectors.
This new assistance from Germany amidst the Russia-Ukraine war is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening Ukraine's military defense and maintaining the country's energy system during the upcoming winter.
