Suvendu's jibe at Mamata's old injury in Nandigram, 'Let March 10 be declared False Day in West Bengal'

Nandigram: On the last day of campaigning before the by-elections, opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari targeted the Trinamool and Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram on Sunday. He sharply criticized by bringing up the old incident of Mamata Banerjee injuring her leg before the 2021 assembly elections.

Suvendu claimed that the assertion of Mamata suffering a serious leg injury at that time is not supported by the recently released medical reports. In this context, he proposed declaring March 10 as 'West Bengal False Day'.

What did Suvendu say about Mamata's injury?

From the campaign stage in Nandigram, Suvendu referred to the incident from 2021, saying there are questions regarding the claim of Mamata Banerjee suffering a serious injury to her leg. According to him, the recently released medical documents do not show evidence of serious injury to the bones or soft tissues.

Suvendu stated that minor injuries could occur from a car accident, and everyone should wish for good health. However, he objected to how the incident was politically portrayed.

He then sarcastically asked, “How about declaring March 10 as 'West Bengal False Day'?”

What happened in 2021?

Before the 2021 assembly elections, then Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was injured in her leg while campaigning in Nandigram. After that, she was seen campaigning in a wheelchair with her leg in plaster and bandages.

The incident had sparked widespread controversy in state politics at that time. The Trinamool had alleged that Mamata was deliberately harmed. On the other hand, the opposition raised questions about the political implications of the incident.

Recently, the old incident has come back into the political debate after two radiology reports from Bangur Institute of Neurosciences were made public.

According to the released reports, there is no evidence of broken bones or dislocated joints in Mamata's left knee. The reports also indicate that there were no significant abnormalities in the soft tissues around the knee. It was claimed that there was no evidence of bone injury or blood clotting in the chest examination.

However, while political debate has arisen around these reports, the interpretations of the medical documents and the nature of the injury at that time differ between the two parties.

Opposition's further attacks

The opposition has also attacked the Trinamool over this issue. They allege that the incident of the leg injury was used for political campaigning before the 2021 elections.

The opposition claims that after the election results were announced, Mamata's leg bandage was quickly removed. They argue that with the recent medical reports coming to light, more questions have arisen regarding the incident at that time.

Message regarding minority votes from Suvendu

On this day, Suvendu Adhikari also commented on the minority voters of Nandigram.

He said, there is no question of forcing anyone to say 'Jai Shri Ram'. Some may choose to speak of Ram, while others may choose to say 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai'. His statement was that people from all communities should come into the mainstream.

Suvendu claimed that many minority people in Nandigram have given him the opportunity to participate in his campaign. Now it remains to be seen what their voting decision will be.

With the old injury of Mamata in Nandigram, minority votes, and political polarization—all combined, the heat of the last-minute campaigning has increased.
