Income Tax Department raids ex-Jagaddal MLA Somnath Shyam's Naihati residence

Tension has spread in Naihati, North 24 Parganas, over an Income Tax Department raid at the residence of former Jagaddal MLA Somnath Shyam. On Wednesday night, Income Tax Department officials searched his house for about two hours. It is learnt that the raid was conducted by a seven-member Income Tax team.

According to sources, various documents at the house were examined during the search. It is also learnt that officials took away almirahs, bank account related documents and several land papers. However, the Income Tax Department has not yet publicly disclosed details about the exact reason for the search or the nature of information contained in the seized documents.

Curiosity has naturally built up in the area over the prolonged search by the seven-member Income Tax team. However, since the investigation is still at a preliminary stage, it would not be appropriate to reach any firm conclusion regarding the reason for the search or the significance of the seized documents.

Somnath Shyam was elected as the Trinamool Congress MLA from Jagaddal assembly constituency in 2021. Following the Income Tax Department's search at his Naihati residence, the matter has also started generating discussion in political circles.

All eyes are now on the Income Tax Department's next steps. If the investigation progresses, more information about the reason for the search and the seized documents may come to light.
